Sports injuries are actually more common than you may think. They can be caused by:
I treat all manner of injuries at my Nuneaton clinic. It’s possible to injure almost any part of the body. Bones may break or fracture, muscles may tear or pull, tendons and ligaments may strain or sprain. Some parts of the body are more prone to injury than others, especially for certain sports or exercises. Treatment usually includes massage, using specialist equipment and rest (yes, rest!) People come to see me at my Nuneaton clinic for all manner of injuries and I’ve put together a helpful top 5 tips below:
Top 5 tips to avoid an injury:
1. Take your training at a sensible pace. Don’t suddenly increase your distance, weight lifted or game time played. This will put extra stress on the muscles, joints and bones involved in your particular exercise and could cause them to over work
2. Warm up properly! Some people often overlook this, especially if they already have a high level of fitness. A good warm up depends on your age, your sport and your fitness level. 5 to 10 minutes should be enough, being sure to stretch and move those parts of the body that your kind of exercise might put the most strain on.
3. Make sure you use a good technique while exercising. If you lift weights, make sure you have good posture. If you’re running, it’s best to have overall body strength and mind your form. It may seem obvious but repeating the same bad form or technique over and over on the same body parts can build up into an injury that might require you to need treatment.
4. Listen to your body! If you have pain, take a rest. Try to mix up your routine. Have a few days off the run and hit the bike instead. Get some sports therapy treatment or a massage. It gets more difficult in a sports team, but try not to battle through a niggling pain as this will only build up into something worse.
5. Stretch out before and after exercise. Muscle fibres break slightly during exercise and can often become shortened – meaning that pulls and tears are more likely. Give yourself time to stretch while your body is still warm and lengthen those muscles back out, so that as those fibres repair they return to the correct length.
